Functional cookies

Cookies that ensure that this website functions properly

The VPRO websites use cookies to ensure that our websites work properly. For example, we use cookies for:

  • remembering information that you enter on the various pages, so that you do not have to fill in all your details again and again.
  • passing on information from one page to the next, for example when a long survey is being filled in or when you have to fill in a lot of data when ordering online.
  • saving preferences such as language, location, desired number of search results to be displayed, etc.
  • saving settings for optimal video display, such as the desired buffer size and the resolution data of your screen
  • reading out your browser settings in order to be able to optimally display our website on your screen.
  • detecting misuse of our website and services, for example by recording a number of consecutive failed login attempts
  • evenly burdening the website, so that the site remains accessible.
  • offering the possibility to save login details so that you don't have to re-enter them every time
  • enabling us to respond to our websites
  • showing or hiding content that should only be visible to returning visitors or only to initial visitors

Web statistics

Cookies that enable us to measure the use of the website.

To determine which parts of the website are most interesting to our visitors, we try to continuously measure using the software of comScore Digital Analytix, Google Analytics and Hotjar. It is part of the (legal) task of the Dutch Public Broadcaster to report on our performance. For this it is necessary to keep web statistics. We also participate in the national internet reach survey DDMM.

To this end, we use cookies, tags/beacons and JavaScript so that we can recognise the browser and thus measure the number of visitors to our websites.

Cookies set by comScore only contain a unique number and are NPO-specific, they are not used to track NPO visitors outside the NPO sites. Cookies that are placed by Google Analytics are designed in such a way that the Dutch Data Protection Authority prescribes so that there is minimal invasion of privacy. VWO cookies are used for A/B testing and do not contain any personal information.

What are Tags/Beacons and JavaScripts?

Beacons and tags are synonyms. Tags are used to measure the visit and use of a website.

JavaScript ensures that measurements cannot be cached so that we can count a repeated page view. In addition, JavaScript is also used for technical measurements to measure which plug-ins are popular, thus making decisions whether a video player should support Flash, Silverlight or HTML5.

The information we collect in this way is used to make statistics. These statistics give us insight into how often our web pages are visited, where visitors spend most of their time, and so on. This enables us to make the structure, navigation and content of the website as user-friendly as possible. The statistics and other reports cannot be traced back to people.

We use cookies for:

  • keeping track of the number of visitors of our web pages
  • tracking the length of time each visitor spends on our web pages
  • determining the order in which a visitor visits the various pages of our website
  • assessing which parts of our site require modification
  • optimisation of the website, among other things via A/B testing
  • Click here for a list of the statistics-cookies we use.
