American artist and designer Theo Watson has devised an open source application that works in the background while you enter text online.

If you are Skyping with friends, sending e-mails or chatting, the 'Auto Smiley' app analyses your face. As soon as a smile has been detected, the software sends a ‘smiley’ :-) into the world – just as if you have typed it yourself on your keyboard. Watson’s aim with this project is not only to enhance the keyboard-users experience (it’s three keys less you have to touch), but primarily to enhance the authenticity of emotions that are communicated online.
