Welcome to In Europe Schools. Here you will find four education programmes based on the documentary series In Europe, produced by VPRO and Euroclio.

In Europe Schools is a one of kind European exchange project in which students film their recent history, and research and compare themes like difficult histories, climate change and migration.

What has happened in Europe over the past 20 years?

Ten years ago, VPRO broadcasting company worked with author Geert Mak to create the television series In Europe about the European history of the 20th century.

Many Dutch history teachers took excerpts from the series and used it in their classrooms to enrich their lessons.

Now Geert Mak wrote a new book and a follow up of the series is made, focussing on the turbulent years since 1999.  What is left of our great expectations and where on earth did we go wrong these past two decades?

Make your own In Europe

In a time when pupils use all kinds of (social) media it is time to let them film their own recent history and to provide you, teachers in history and social studies, with an interactive education kit in line with the television series which will contribute to forming opinions, citizenship and media literacy.

The lessons contain a clear educational programme, tailored excerpts from the series and tutorials to facilitate teachers and students in making a short documentary.

The lessons are meant for grades 3 to 5 of senior secondary education (HAVO) and pre university education (VWO). A special option will be prepared for grades 3 and 4 of prevocational secondary education (VMBOT-MAVO)

European Exchange

Schools from all over Europe will take part in this project and work on the same themes. All their short documentaries will be gathered in VPRO playlists on YouTube.
