The Muppets

Two ‘Muppets’ are present for each edition. Two experts from a certain discipline such as technology, design or media listen from the sidelines just like Statler and Waldorf from The Muppet Show. They give each pitcher feedback or pose a critical question.

Eefje op den Buysch is managing director at Robot Love, a two-year art and technology manifestation that asks the question if we can learn from robots about love. She previously worked as founder and lecturer of the Transmedia Storytelling Lab at the Fontys Academy for Creative Industries in Tilburg. She obtained her Master’s degree of Science (cum laude) in Informatics - Human Centered Multimedia, on the subject of using future scenarios and narratives for the design of a simulated future newsroom. With her knowledge and experience in digital media and information technologies she led several (research)projects on transmedia, robotics and online communication.

Lucas Maassen lives and works in Eindhoven. After studying at the Design Academy Eindhoven he started his career as an independent conceptual designer. Verdien je Ticket helps vulnerable juveniles to get a job that fits their personal goals and talents by offering coached learning in voluntary jobs at cultural organizations like festivals and events. Secondly, it helps the organizations to find the right volunteers for their event.

At the moment Verdien je Ticket is collaborating with 013 Poppodium and R-Newt in Tilburg and taking steps with the city of Tilburg to connect with more cultural organizations. Norbert would like the audience to comment on the project and help me find the right people/organizations to collaborate with in the Eindhoven area.

The project We are Human Rights by the We Are foundation is a collaboration between human rights defenders and designers. 7 designers and 7 human rights defenders investigate the possibilities of collaborating within the field of human rights and a range of design methodologies. We Are Human Rights wants to get the message across that by supporting young designers and giving them the possibilities to work in international fields, it will open up new inspiration and ideas on how to improve our environment.

We Are is a young foundation that wants to proof that designers can contribute to these international topics but it also wants to increase their communication towards the outside world. Bernhard is looking for ways to increase the impact of the foundation and grow a network to create a bigger platform.

In popping, breathing skills are very important however much less focused on by poppers. Moreover, the techniques are rarely taught in regular classes or workshops. Without proper breathing, poppers will get exhausted more quickly and this may affect and ruin their timing.

PLOW is a device that measures and visualises the timing as well as breathing and gives poppers easy-understanding information about their breathing and timing. With the design of PLOW, Siyu aims to guide poppers to train their breathing techniques, and help them use these techniques in dance. Siyu is looking for advice on how to improve the interface design of PLOW. Also, he is looking for a methodology that could be used to help improve poppers breathing and timing.

"One can take the ape out of the jungle, but not the jungle out of the ape", said primatologist Frans de Waal. Despite of our advanced technological society, we are, and remain apes. Apes that need exercise and play to stay healthy. Yet in some of our living environments, like the office environment, we are unable to meet those needs. People are not naturally lazy, people are only lazy in an environment that encourages lazy behaviour. The problem, therefore, lies in the general lay-out of the office environment itself.

The Office Jungle is a radical new office environment, attempting to solve people’s growing physical inactivity. It uses suspended, dynamic geodesic structures that physically and sensuously stimulate the body, affording climbing and exercising playfully. As such, The Office Jungle reverses the question at hand, asking not how to move in an office, but how to work in a jungle? Ingmar is looking for advice which market or user group he can best target when he wants to get The Office Jungle off the ground and start a company.

The app Findur checks the realtime inventory of physical fashion stores and makes them realtime searchable for consumers, based on their location. So if you are looking for a blue shirt in size M in Eindhoven, hundreds of relevant products appear, combined with the directions to the closest store.

The Findur platform already connected over 1500 physical stores in the Netherlands, including chains like de Bijenkorf, Mango, Hunkemöller and WE Fashion. Findur currently focusses on marketing and sales and is looking for advice on how to further develop the app in terms of functionalities. Read more about Findur.

With his company R-Energy Hans Vullers is developing a device, a kind of windmill, to locally produce clean and green energy. The windmills are built from recycled and/or recyclable materials. Aerodynamically and beautifully shaped, they guide the wind through and generate electricity using the drag of the wind instead of the lift, which conventional windmills do. The advantage is that turbulent, changing wind can be harnessed. Combined with smart technological inventions these devices can be a valuable addition to methods like solar panels and geothermal warmth and thus make our houses and buildings more sustainable. Hans is looking for feedback his ideas and methods and people who want to join in and become part of the team.
